Program: Cuba – Culture, People and BIRDS!! Cuba has more than 354 species of birds, 27 of which are endemic (two of which are believed extinct.) Many believe the main star is the Bee Hummingbird, the smallest bird on the entire planet and found only on Cuba. Havana is the home of classic cars and a melting pot blending Cuban, Spanish and Afro-American cultures. Under a communist regime, life is very hard and simple for most and made more challenging since the demise of the Soviet Union. Diplomatic relations with the U.S, however, have not resumed. Economic sanctions (the embargo) are still in place. The black market flourishes. Commodities are scarce outside of Havana with rolling electricity blackouts, limited food, gasoline and transportation options. But the birds and countryside are amazing. Joe Corcoran, President of Baltimore Bird Club, will take us on a tour highlighting the birds and culture from Havana, San Diego de los Banos, Zapata Swamp, Camaguey, Najasa and Cayo Coco as he experienced on a recent trip led by Cuba 360 in March 2023. In-person and online.
