Allegany County
Allegany County, in western Maryland, lies in the ridge-and-valley area of the Appalachian Mountains. The terrain in most of the county is rugged and steep. Public lands include Rocky Gap State Park; the C&O Canal National Historic Park along the Potomac River; and several large state forests and state hunting areas.

Allegany County is bordered by Pennsylvania to the north; Garrett County, MD to the west; West Virginia to the south; and Washington County, MD, to the east. The Potomac River forms the southern border abutting West Virginia. The county seat is the historic town of Cumberland, located in the northern part of the county on a noticeable northward-pointing loop of the Potomac River. Another large town slightly farther west is Frostburg, the home of Frostburg State University, part of the University System of Maryland. Frostburg is also the location of the Appalachian Laboratory of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Studies, where scientists conduct ecosystems research, with an emphasis on the environments of western Maryland and the Appalachian region.
I-68/US Route 40, which runs east-west through the northern part of the county, is the main highway corridor in the county.
