Description:

“Mongolia: Birding in the Footsteps of Genghis Khan”, presented by Gail Mackiernan. Gail will share her June 2018 birding trip to Mongolia, one of the most interesting countries to the naturalist. Immense grasslands, vast Gobi Desert, wild mountains and surprisingly varied wetlands (plus the lowest population density of any nation) host some of the planet’s most wanted birds. The group, ably supported by Mongolian outfitters, traveled to the dense taiga forest of the north, south through the steppe grasslands and into the Great Gobi Desert Protected Area near Mongolia’s southern border with China. Most travel was off-road, on faint tracks or even over trackless desert. It was wonderful. The group recorded about 175 species of birds, with many rarities like Pallas’s Sand-grouse and Henderson’s Ground-jay. They also scored with mammals, including Przewalski’s Horse (the only true wild horse). Instructions for online participation TBA.
