Shrike Hunt!

January 21 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Host:

Baltimore Bird Club

Leader Tim Carney, timcarney83@gmail.com

Description:

Shrikes are very rare in Baltimore County! The last Baltimore records of Northern Shrike were from 2007 and 2020… and before that, the most recent one was from 1923! Loggerhead Shrikes are about as rare, and aside from a one-day wonder in 2014, the next most recent records are from 1999 and 1983. However, most shrike habitat (vast open spaces) in Baltimore County is underbirded, so there could be a shrike out there waiting to be discovered. Therefore, we will be hosting the BBC’s first-ever Shrike Hunt on Sunday, January 21. Email Tim Carney (timcarney83@gmail.com) if you’re interested in participating. You can either choose where you’ll be shriking or Tim can assign you a territory. Please note that most of these areas are on less-traveled side roads, so be cautious in the event of inclement weather or unsafe conditions, and respect private property. We probably won’t find a shrike, but we’ll get to go birding in areas that lack coverage and probably find some other fun winter species inhabiting open spaces like Northern Harrier, American Kestrel, American Pipit, Horned Lark, and maybe even Snow Bunting.
